The Stubacher Sonnblick 3,088m

Stubacher Sonnblick is a great first tour in the high alpine. The climb is not overly hard in terms of technical difficulty, although not a gimme due to high altitude and thin air. Thanks to cable car access its a great day trip to get used to glacier travel, higher altitude ski touring and as preparation for bigger goals like Grossglockner(link) or Grossvenediger(link).

What’s to be expected:

We meet each other at the bottom of Weißsee Gleterscherbahnen (or at your hotel). We take the convenient gondola up to Rudolfshütte at 2300 m. Thats where we start our hike, first over the flat and frozen lake up towards steeper terrain. Mid way we travel over glaciated terrain before we reach the steeper summit pyramide. Depending on snow conditions, we leave our skis and go on to the summit, where we enjoy the beautiful scenery in the middle of the National Park. Afterwards a great run back down to Rudolfshütte to have a coffee and cake and sit in the sun.

What you get:

Full day of individual skitouring guiding by a certified IFMGA Mountain Guide and Level-4 Ski Instructor, Tips and Tricks to improve your skiing, Introduction on ski touring topics like: walking technique, avalanche awareness, Rental of beacon/tranceiver, shovel and probe, Amazing day out in the backcountry

Conditions:

  • a little backcountry experience is helpful
  • physical fitness to climb 800 vertical meters necessary
